Kevin Van Staeyen
Biomechanics expert, former cyclist and bikepacker
Cycling is in Kevin's blood. He grew up in a cycling family, rode his first race at the age of seven and kept racing until he was 24.
That was not where it stopped — that was where it started. After his racing years Kevin threw himself into the human body and the interplay between rider and bike. Specialist training, a course of study in osteopathy and years of self-teaching built an exceptionally deep expertise in bikefitting and cycling biomechanics.
That knowledge never stands still. Kevin works closely with the University of Antwerp, Product Development department, on research and new applications in the cycling world.
And he does not know the bike from measurements alone. After his competitive years he set off on long bikepacking trips across Latin America. Thousands of kilometres in the saddle taught him what comfort, efficiency and a correct position really mean.
At Bikefit Van Staeyen it all comes together: a lifetime of cycling, a thorough knowledge of the body, and an unquenchable curiosity about how rider and bike can become more of a single whole.
Core team
Michael Van Staeyen
Bike-fit expert and former professional cyclist
For Michael Van Staeyen, cycling began at the age of seven. What started in the youth ranks quickly grew into an impressive record. Michael won a great many races and repeatedly topped the win charts in the youth categories. Early on he was regarded as one of the great Belgian sprint talents of his generation.
After a long and successful youth career he moved up as an under-23 to the renowned Rabobank development squad. The professional peloton followed not long after, with spells at Topsport Vlaanderen, Cofidis and Roompot-Charles.
As a professional, Michael built a career in which speed, race instinct, nerve and modesty became his hallmarks. He took some ten professional victories, won stages in the Tour of Denmark among others, and could match the very best in the world in a sprint — beating Robbie McEwen, among others, at the Memorial Rik Van Steenbergen.
After years at the highest level, Michael said goodbye to the professional peloton at the Scheldeprijs, his home race. To the bike, he said no goodbye at all.
At Bikefit Van Staeyen his years as a professional rider are now the foundation of his speciality: the technical side of the bikefit. Michael knows a bike down to the smallest detail and understands better than anyone what equipment, set-up and position mean in practice. He combines that technical expertise with something that is hard to teach: thousands of hours of experience in the professional peloton.
Where biomechanics and engineering meet, Michael makes sure not only that the rider sits well on the bike, but that the bike is built perfectly around the rider.
